20 years of Buffy

What can I say about Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

This show means so much to me. It came into the world at a time that I didn't know who I was or who I wanted to be, and I was ashamed to say I liked something that was different than what my friends liked. But it helped cement my love of vampires, and made my wanting of a girl hero burn loud and bright in my soul.
Sarah Michelle Gellar joined the ranks of Drew Barrymore and Shannon Doherty as my idols. (Now seeing them as adults they are still pretty f*#king awesome). I wanted to devour everything I could find that was 'like Buffy'. I would never have found Anita Blake if it weren't for Buffy - she paved the way for so many amazing characters throughout television, movies and books I could write a separate post on that alone.

She was the chosen one. And she changed my life for the better.

I'd like to personally thank Joss Whedon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the character of Buffy herself for being what I needed at a time in my life when I didn't know up from down half the time. Thank you for giving us someone to idolise in this suckfest of a world.

Lets talk WIP

Let's talk about my WIP.

It's had a name change. Keep your eye open for my urban fantasy PROPHECY GIRL. I will be posting excerpts as I'm editing, and the story on Wattpad.
(My username on Wattpad is RTijaMaurice. Come hang out!)

I have wanted to write an urban fantasy for a very long time but there had never been a fully formed story and world until now. I am deeply inspired by Laurell K Hamilton and Anita Blake, and I loved every minute of writing this story. There will be more to come also.

Prophecy Girl is shorter than my Afflicted books, and I think it works well for the story.
I'm also loving Wattpad as a medium, gives us the chance to interact on a different level and for you to give me some imput on Prophecy Girl in the early stages. I love interacting with readers and other writers, and people who love books and the written word. I am so looking forward to it, I can't wait until its ready to go!

And I really hope you guys enjoy it. This is something new for me; new genre, new time period, characters, content, everything! I had a TON of fun writing it. I hope you all have fun reading it!

Keep checking back here to see when the first chapters go up!

The Revisit - Guilty Pleasures Review and Thoughts

I binged the last 150 pages or so and I am finally done with my reread of Guilty Pleasures!
So here is my first revisit review!

Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K Hamilton
Anita Blake Vampire Hunter #1

This book, when I originally read it in the early 2000's (which I much later learned was ten or so years after it first came out), was a serious turning point for me. I had no idea what urban fantasy was and I had never seen vampires, or any other supernatural characters, in such context and it was mind boggling. It opened my eyes in so many ways.
I immediately fell in love with Anita Blake. And during the reread I was reminded again why I wish she was my best friend (the one liners alone are gold!) and I discovered details about this book that I feel like I missed the first time.
Perhaps it is because I am in the midst of writing my own urban fantasy or the difference between my 25 and 35 year old brains I don't know, but Guilty Pleasures is more wonderful than I can remember. Anita's strength practically leaps off the page. She is a hero for those of us who didn't know we needed one, and inspite of the fact that she wouldn't want to be one.

But I could go on for days, and I won't. I am so pleased that even though I couldn't do much reading for a bit that I was able to get it done and that I am moving on to The Laughing Corpse.

I have read The Laughing Corpse, so it is another revisit, but I haven't read the next four books after that so it will be total new ground for me. I am happy to be piecing together the bits of the series that I had missed and I am really looking forward to it.

Just for your reference, the ones I missed are called (with their numbers in the series):
3. Circus of the Damned
4. The Lunatic Cafe
5. Bloody Bones
6. The Killing Dance

Have any of you ever done a revisit of books you previously read? How did it go?
Have you reread Anita Blake too? Post in the comments!

General and Revisit Update

Hi everyone

So I wanted to talk a bit about what has been going on with me lately.
I fell into a bit of a funk before christmas, so most of my energy has been focused on trying to get my current WIP done. Which means that things have been cast aside, like reading. I have got so backlogged with my reading that Guilty Pleasures got cast aside.

BUT I am back now, bright eyed and bushy tailed, and I am going to push through Guilty Pleasures, which I have about 150pgs left of, so I can get started on The Laughing Corpse while I finish the WIP.

So it's going to be a fun time the next few months. I will try to do better about updating here!
